MPWD’s Poster Contest Returns for 2023

On Thursday, April 24, 2023, MPWD hosted the twelve winners of its Water Poster Contest, which made a welcomed return after a 3-year hiatus due to the pandemic. Winning student entries are featured in MPWD’s Annual Water Awareness Calendar, with this year’s theme being “Make Water Efficiency Your California Way of Life,” promoting the conservation of water as a long-term perspective. Local 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students from schools in the MPWD’s service community were invited to submit posters for judging by the MPWD staff and Board. MPWD extends its appreciation to Belmont Oaks Academy, Immaculate Heart of Mary School, Cipriani Elementary School, Nesbit Elementary School, and San Carlos Charter Learning Center for their participation and commitment. The twelve student winners were invited to the April Board of Directors Meeting where they received certificates of recognition and complimentary calendars, while gifts cards were additionally presented to the grand prize winner and both runner ups. The MPWD also recognized and presented Mr. Skidmore from Notre Dame Elementary School with a $100 gift card as the teacher with the most class participation this year.

Louis J. Vella, MPWD Board President, reflected on the annual contest, saying, “The water awareness calendar event is one of my most favorite initiatives the Mid-Peninsula Water District embarks upon. Growing up, the appreciation and the value of our water as a most precious commodity has been instilled in me and will remain with me. Seeing the great participation from students and their teachers was indeed a sight to behold. Our region needs wise and dedicated water leaders now and in the future. We hope that the involvement of these young minds may produce that tiny seed that will cultivate the water leaders of tomorrow.”

“A considerable amount of work went into the relaunch of MPWD’s Water Poster Contest, but I am grateful for the results,” remarked Brandon Spears, MPWD’s Water Resources Coordinator. “It was exciting to see the energy of the local school community at the Board Meeting and I thoroughly enjoyed presenting awards to our highly artistic participants. We aim to foster good stewardship of water resources for this generation and beyond.”
